Though the incidence of alcoholism is slightly less among women than among men, once it develops, this disease tends to progress more rapidly in women. Physiological differences quickly put women at greater risk for physical complications, some of which are unique to women such as breast cancer and possibility of bearing a child with fetal alcohol syndrome. Yet women are often more reluctant than men to seek treatment for this disease.
