Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a term used to describe a disease of the lung caused by airfl ow obstruction. COPD is a chronic and debilitating disease that is sometimes fatal. With aggressive medical management and efforts on the part of the patient, COPD can be managed and the disease process slowed down. This activity reviews the normal function of the pulmonary system as well as the changes COPD brings to the body. Also discussed are risk factors for developing COPD and signs and symptoms of this disease.
