Cardiology
INTRODUCTION
Coronary heart disease (CHD) affects 14 million people and is the leading cause of death in the United States. This year alone, 500,000 patients will be diagnosed with new unstable angina and another 1.5 million will have a myocardial infarction (MI). One-third of patients having an MI will die within the first hour due to ventricular fibrillation. This program's presenter focuses on the six major types of MIs and treatment options. Pharmacological management is also emphasized.
After completing this activity, the participant should be able to:
- 1. describe five common signs or symptoms of a myocardial infarction.
- 2. identify six major types of myocardial infarctions.
- 3. identify the coronary artery that supplies blood flow to each area of the heart.
- 4. discuss four treatment options that can be initiated for each type of myocardial infarction.
- 5. differentiate treatment options for a left versus right myocardial infarction.
