Information presented in this CD-ROM instructional program will assist the learner in understanding the dynamics of a closed-chest drainage system. Mastery of this program will enable the learner to:
- Understand the physiological functioning of a normal lung.
- Identify lung complications which require the insertion of a chest tube.
- Discuss the underlying principles of a closed chest drainage system.
- Identify when the principles of medical and surgical asepsis are utilized.
- Conduct an assessment of the respiratory system, wound site, tube patency and lung drainage.
- Determine system patency and detect air leaks.
- Identify factors, which reflect accurate documentation when caring for a chest tube.
- Explain the nursing responsibilities related to changing a chest drainage unit, accidental dislodgment and clamping a chest tube.
- The learner will be able to differentiate between a pleural and mediastinal chest tube.
