This series of three clinical programs reveals additions and changes from DSM-III-R to DSM-IV for mood, psychotic, and anxiety disorders. Each videotape focuses on one particular area of psychiatric diagnosis and contains enactments of three outstanding clinicians’ actual patient interviews. Each videotape begins with an introductory discussion between the clinician and the moderator. The clinician then conducts three 10-minute psychiatric diagnostic interviews. Following each interview, the clinician and the moderator discuss the taped segments and comment on issues illustrated during the interviews. These issues include

• How the new DSM-IV diagnostic criteria were utilized in the interview
• How diagnostic markers were elicited
• How interpersonal issues, as well as diagnostic markers, were identified

The interviews utilize reference data to examine conclusions reached during the interviews. Each tape also demonstrates good interviewing techniques and highlights the development of a good doctor-patient relationship.

A printed list of relevant issues highlighted in interviews and elaborated in the clinical discussions accompanies each videotape. These printed sheets may be duplicated by teachers for distribution to students.

Since these are real cases, they are excellent educational supplements. All three presenters were members of the DSM-IV workgroups on these topics, and each case is an original view of new issues and approaches to diagnoses in DSM-IV. Each enactment will guide teachers and clinicians through new approaches and new categories, showing examples of how experienced clinicians conduct these interviews.
